Jeollanam-do announced that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo visited Jeonnam, the "number one place for offshore wind power," on the 18th to inspect the country's largest offshore wind power complex, which is nearing completion this year, and the Mokpo New Port, the supporting site, and to listen to opinions from the industry and local governments.

The Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1, scheduled to begin commercial operation in the first half of 2025, is the largest in Korea with a capacity of 100MW and the first purely private project financing (PF) project. Mokpo New Port is the only port in Korea supporting offshore wind power.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo stated, "The activation of offshore wind power will strengthen the foundation of energy security and serve as an opportunity for Jeonnam to become a leading region in renewable energy," and instructed relevant ministries to devise close support measures on site.

At the meeting, Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeonnam expressed his ambition for Jeonnam, the mecca of offshore wind power, to lead Korea's carbon neutrality and balanced development. In particular, he proposed government-level measures to solve the power grid shortage problem and explained an innovative plan to consume electricity 50% each in the metropolitan area and local regions to promote renewable energy, presenting concrete solutions.

Governor Kim Young-rok said, "The currently reviewed regional differential electricity tariff system is being discussed by zones (metropolitan area, non-metropolitan area, Jeju), but it needs to be reviewed from the perspective of national balanced development on this occasion," adding, "A differential standard at the provincial level is necessary to expand offshore wind power, and if energy-intensive companies such as data centers, semiconductors, and secondary batteries relocate to the region seeking cheap and clean electricity, it will stabilize the power grid and overcome the one-pole system centered on the metropolitan area."
