The meeting was attended by National Assembly members Han Ki-ho and Kim Yong-tae, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province, Pocheon City, Cheorwon County, and other key related agencies to discuss timely promotion plans for the project.
The Pocheon-Cheorwon Expressway construction project is part of the North-South 4-axis expressway construction project included in the "2nd Expressway Construction Plan (2021?2025)," aiming to establish a trunk road network in the border area and achieve balanced regional development through this.
However, it has faced difficulties in promotion as it was not included as a target project for the preliminary feasibility study at the "7th Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee (Ministry of Strategy and Finance)" held last October.
At the meeting, Pocheon City and Cheorwon County emphasized the feasibility of the section from Sinbuk-myeon in Pocheon City to Galmal-eup in Cheorwon County (27.5 km) and delivered a joint petition requesting priority promotion to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. They particularly reiterated the necessity of the project to improve the transportation infrastructure in the underdeveloped northern metropolitan area and for regional development.
A Pocheon City official stated, "Despite being a border area, Pocheon City and Cheorwon County have been neglected in balanced development support and remain areas with outdated transportation infrastructure," adding, "Full support from the central government is necessary for the selection and approval of the preliminary feasibility study for the Pocheon-Cheorwon Expressway construction project."
He continued, "Recently, the number of tourists visiting Pocheon has surged due to the revitalization of Hantangang River tourism, but the poor expressway infrastructure causes great inconvenience to residents and tourists," and added, "We request the priority promotion of expressway construction in the sections with heavy traffic and tourism activation."
