Start of Comprehensive Commercial Operation in the First Half of Next Year
Providing Clean Energy to 60,000 Households
Global green energy investment and development company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) announced on the 18th that it has commenced the first power generation of ‘Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power 1,’ jointly developed with SK Innovation E&S.
Located 9 km northwest of Jaeundo Island in Sinan-gun, Jeonnam Province, Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power 1 began construction early last year, started turbine installation in September, and plans to complete turbine installation next month, with comprehensive commercial operation scheduled for the first half of next year. When fully operational, Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power 1 is expected to provide clean energy to approximately 60,000 households.
Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power 1 contributes to revitalizing the local community and economy through close cooperation with domestic supply chain partners, coexistence with local residents, and utilization of local ports and facilities.
Thomas Wibe Poulsen, CIP Partner and Head of CIP Asia-Pacific (APAC), said, “The first power generation of Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power 1 is an important milestone not only for our company but also for our collaborating partners and the Korean offshore wind industry. We are proud to have achieved this based on our solid project execution capabilities and close cooperation with our partners, and we will continue to provide unwavering support to contribute to Korea’s renewable energy deployment goals.”
Korea, one of the largest offshore wind markets in the Asia-Pacific region, holds enormous potential for the offshore wind industry and aims to deploy 14.3 GW of offshore wind power by 2030 under government leadership.
Additionally, Korea has announced a carbon neutrality goal by 2050, and additional large-scale renewable energy projects are underway to achieve this.
Since starting investments in the Korean market in 2018, CIP has continuously pursued large-scale offshore wind project development and led the introduction of innovative technologies. Along with the Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power project, CIP holds a domestic offshore wind development pipeline of approximately 4.4 GW, including the Haeul Offshore Wind, Haesong Offshore Wind, and Haegum Offshore Wind projects in Ulsan and Sinan, Jeonnam.
