At the campaign site, leaflets and promotional materials informing residents about proper parenting methods, types of child abuse, and reporting procedures were distributed. In addition, the campaign highlighted the abolition of the “child disciplinary right” that allowed corporal punishment of children under the revised Civil Act, emphasizing the establishment of a culture of parenting without corporal punishment.
Besides this, Seo-gu continuously carries out various activities to prevent child abuse and promote children’s rights. Through collaboration among public, private, and police sectors (Gwangju Child Protection Agency, Western Education Support Office, Western Police Station), they actively identify children at risk, conduct various child abuse prevention education programs, human rights inspections of child welfare facilities, and joint inspections of high-risk groups for re-abuse. In particular, to strengthen the child protection system, they hold case review meetings, operate a child abuse response information linkage council, and designate specialized medical institutions for child abuse (iFirst Children’s Hospital, Gwangju Hwajeong Children’s Hospital, Miraero 21 Hospital, Bright Mind Mental Health Clinic), among other efforts.
Park Yonggeum, Director of the Child and Youth Division, said, “Child abuse is not simply a family issue but an important task that the entire community must solve,” adding, “We will continue to cooperate with the local community to make Seo-gu a place where children are happy and respected.”
