'Dongbyeorak' from a Clear Sky... Thai Businessman Explains "Why Cash Was Scattered at the Temple"

"The Meaning of Praying for Merit to Buddha"

A businessman in Thailand has attracted attention by scattering cash as a way to make merit to Buddha.

On the 18th (local time), according to Vietnamese media docnhanh and others, a businessman recently scattered cash at a temple in Suphanburi Province, central Thailand, as a way to make merit to Buddha.

In a video capturing the scene, a man can be seen climbing into a large basket attached to a crane and indiscriminately throwing banknotes. Many people rushed to pick up the bills falling from the sky.

The man reportedly scattered several 100 baht (about 4,000 won) and 1,000 baht (about 40,000 won) notes. However, the exact amount of money he spent that day has not been disclosed. It is also reported that he had already made a similar donation in September.

Originally, Thai temples prohibit receiving money from devotees in principle, as accumulating personal wealth is believed to hinder the path to Nirvana. However, events where money is scattered to the public are known to be exceptionally allowed as they symbolize returning wealth to the community.

This is not the first case of cash being scattered from the sky. In October last year, Czech broadcaster and influencer Kamil Bardoshek flew a helicopter and scattered cash worth 1 million dollars (about 1.35 billion won) from the sky to promote a movie. He explained his act of scattering money by saying, "Helping someone and donating money to good causes, distributing it to all participants who joined our event, and using that money to create another show. So I thought I would do these three things at once."
