The Bar Association Holds Symposium on 'Public Defender System Improvement Measures' Yonhap News

The Korean Bar Association's National Public Defense Lawyers Association, together with the office of National Assembly member Park Hee-seung, will hold a symposium titled "Institutional Improvement Measures to Substantially Guarantee the Right to Receive Assistance from Public Defenders" on the 19th at the National Assembly's 2nd Conference Room.


The first session, under the theme "Current Status and Issues of the Public Defender System," will feature a presentation by lawyer Choi Su-jin (Public Defender for Detained Cases at Seoul Eastern District Court Non-Stop Public Defense), with Professor Lee Chang-on (Ewha Womans University Law School) and lawyer Jung Hye-jin (Public Defender at Suwon High Court) participating as discussants.


The second session will have lawyer Son Young-hyun (Public Defender at Seoul Central District Court) presenting on "Measures to Improve the Treatment of Public Defenders," with Judge Lee Hye-rang (Judicial Support Officer, Criminal Support Review, Court Administration Office) and reporter Kim Jung-yeon (JoongAng Ilbo) serving as discussants.


The third session, themed "Amendment Measures for Laws Related to Public Defenders," will include a presentation by lawyer Kim Do-yoon (Public Defender at Incheon District Court), with Professor Kim Hee-gyun (University of Seoul Law School) and lawyer Lee So-young (Legislative Research Officer, Legal and Judicial Team, National Assembly Research Service) participating as discussants.


This symposium was organized to examine the current status and issues of the public defender system and to explore measures for improving their treatment. Kim Young-hoon, president of the Korean Bar Association, stated, "We expect this symposium to make a significant contribution to institutional improvement, and we will continue to strive for reforms that guarantee the fundamental rights of the people."
