The Democratic Party of Korea stated that regarding the sentencing of party leader Lee Jae-myung to a suspended prison term in the first trial of the Public Official Election Act violation case, "The party will consider more specific and direct legal responses than before at the party level."
On the 17th, Secretary-General Kim Yoon-duk said at a press briefing, "Considering the seriousness of the trial and the issue of the party having to return the deposit, the party will specifically review its response."
He added, "This is both an issue concerning Leader Lee and the party as a whole," and "We will respond together with lawmakers who are legal professionals."
Regarding this sentencing, he emphasized, "It is a verdict rendered without the court properly understanding the prosecution's malicious investigation and indictment."
The Democratic Party also provided the press with the transcript of Leader Lee's remarks related to the Baekhyeon-dong preferential development allegations during the 2021 National Assembly audit, which the court judged as guilty.
In response to a question about whether this ruling would damage Leader Lee's leadership, Secretary-General Kim said, "The Democratic Party will continue to fight steadfastly and carry out the given tasks without wavering," adding, "We have received encouraging calls from a considerable number of lawmakers, and the party is doing better."
He continued, "We believe that in the second trial, a legal judgment based on truth and facts will be properly made," and "I am confident that this trial process exposes the actions of the Yoon Seok-yeol government and prosecution not only in Leader Lee's personal political activities but also in the Democratic Party's path to power."
