A man in his 20s, who was on trial for sexual violence crimes, was sentenced to a heavy prison term for committing multiple additional sexual offenses. The case was uncovered through meticulous evidence analysis by the prosecution.

According to the legal community on the 16th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Yeongwol Branch of Chuncheon District Court sentenced A (23) to 8 years in prison on charges including rape, statutory rape of a minor, violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act, special confinement, and forcible molestation.

He was also ordered a 10-year employment ban at child and youth-related institutions and to wear an electronic location tracking device (electronic anklet) for 7 years.

A was indicted for raping his girlfriend B six times between March and April of this year.

After B discovered nude photos and sexual videos of women on A’s cellphone and notified him of their breakup, A found B the next day, confined her for a long time, and committed sexual violence.

The approximately 39-minute video submitted by the victim clearly showed about 2 minutes of the two’s acts. However, the prosecution discovered scenes reflected on a plastic washing machine lid in the video and, through image enhancement work by the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office Forensic Science Division, confirmed about 37 additional minutes of criminal acts.

When decisive evidence emerged, A confessed to the crimes. The prosecution revealed additional offenses that the victim had not been aware of and brought A to trial.

A had previously been indicted in 2022 for raping his then-girlfriend and threatening to distribute sexual videos. At that time, he was on trial without detention on charges of statutory rape. It was also revealed that he forcibly molested a woman he met through an acquaintance.

Although A denied some charges during the trial, the court found all charges guilty.

The court stated, “Despite undergoing a long trial for sexual crimes committed in 2022, the defendant did not repent and repeatedly committed sexual violence in various ways. Considering the severe mental suffering experienced by the victims, the nature of the crimes is very serious.”

It added, “The defendant attempted to conceal the crimes by filing complaints against the victim during the investigation to apply psychological pressure or by persuading her to write false settlement agreements. The possibility of rehabilitation is low,” explaining the sentencing rationale.
