Regarding the first trial verdict on the perjury coaching charges against Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 17th that the investigation was possible thanks to the 'Geomsu Wonbok' (restoration of the prosecution's investigative authority) carried out while he was Minister of Justice.
On the same day, Han posted on his social media (SNS), "In April 2022, the Democratic Party pushed through the 'Geomsu Wanbak' (complete removal of the prosecution's investigative authority) legislation, which stripped most of the prosecution's investigative functions, just before the regime change, as if making a 'midnight escape'."
He continued, "As the nominee for Minister of Justice at the time, I strongly opposed the Geomsu Wanbak legislation, saying 'Only criminals should fear a prosecution that does its job properly.' After becoming Minister of Justice, I also filed a constitutional complaint against it."
He added, "If the Democratic Party's Geomsu Wanbak had been in effect then, the prosecution would not have been able to investigate the perjury coaching case. Although they may not have specifically anticipated it, that was likely the Democratic Party's intention with Geomsu Wanbak."
Han also said, "In September 2022, the Ministry of Justice created the 'Geomsu Wonbok Enforcement Decree,' which allowed the prosecution to investigate perjury coaching cases. The investigation into Lee's perjury coaching case, with a verdict scheduled for the 25th, was possible precisely because of that 'Geomsu Wonbok Enforcement Decree.'"
