President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is visiting Lima, Peru to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, participated in the official APEC event, the 'Dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC),' on the afternoon of the 15th (local time), stating, "Korea will contribute to the shared prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region based on AI innovation."
ABAC is an official APEC private advisory body established in 1995 to reflect the opinions of businesspeople in the Asia-Pacific region in APEC discussions. The 'Dialogue with ABAC' is held annually during the APEC Summit.
This year's Dialogue with ABAC was divided into a plenary session involving both APEC member country leaders and ABAC members, and 12 sub-group meetings allowing for in-depth discussions. Julia Torreblanca, Chair of ABAC, presented ABAC's policy recommendations on regional economic integration, human development, and sustainability during the plenary session.
In the subsequent sub-group meeting, President Yoon, the chair of next year's APEC, engaged in dialogue with ABAC members in the same sub-group as Dina Boluarte, President of Peru and chair of this year's APEC. The sub-group in which President Yoon participated exchanged views on AI, digital inclusion, sustainability, women, and small and medium-sized enterprises based on ABAC's policy recommendations.
President Yoon emphasized securing AI competitiveness and the safe use of AI in the Asia-Pacific region, introducing various AI policies being promoted in Korea, such as the AI-Semiconductor Initiative, the AI Seoul Summit, and the National Artificial Intelligence Committee.
He added, "Korea will contribute to the shared prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region based on AI innovation," and stated, "We will select 'Industry AI Best Practices' to spread manufacturing AI in APEC economies with a high manufacturing ratio, and through the 'AI Safety Research Institute,' we will promote safe AI across the Asia-Pacific region." He also proposed the establishment of the 'APEC AI Standards Forum' to build common standards and certification systems for industrial AI.
More than 80 people, including APEC member country leaders and ABAC members, attended the Dialogue with ABAC. From Korea, ABAC members such as Cho Hyun-sang, Vice Chairman of HS Hyosung, Lee Kyu-ho, Vice Chairman of Kolon, and Lee Joo-wan, CEO of Megazone Cloud, participated. Vice Chairman Cho is scheduled to chair the 2025 ABAC and lead next year's 'Dialogue with ABAC.'
