Jeonnam Province has taken proactive measures by activating the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters following the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) at poultry farms in neighboring Jeollabuk-do, Gangwon, and Chungbuk provinces since October.
On the 15th, Jeonnam Province held a situation assessment meeting and converted the existing Livestock Disease Prevention Headquarters into the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, transitioning to a permanent operational system.
As the government elevated the crisis response level to 'severe' due to the nationwide spread of avian influenza, Jeonnam Province swiftly entered an emergency duty system including surveillance of livestock farms.
Additionally, the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has divided responsibilities among collaborative task forces, including overall situation management, inspection of frontline city and county compliance with emergency avian influenza action guidelines, human infection prevention measures, surveillance of major migratory bird habitats, and environmental pollution prevention measures at avian influenza burial sites.
Since October, Jeonnam Province has implemented intensive disinfection periods at migratory bird habitats and poultry farms to prevent highly pathogenic avian influenza, and enforced breeding restrictions on duck farms in high-risk areas as part of stringent countermeasures.
On the 19th, a meeting will be held with city and county officials to review the progress of avian influenza prevention measures, including disinfection of migratory bird habitats, livestock farms, and vehicles, as well as inspection of the operation of key disinfection facilities, to establish additional countermeasures.
Park Nam-il, Director of the Social Disaster Division of Jeonnam Province, stated, “We will do our utmost to ensure there are no gaps in avian influenza prevention and control, by inspecting the operation of key disinfection facilities, the biosecurity status of farms and affiliates, and immediately addressing any deficiencies.”
