Oh Se-hoon on Lee Jae-myung's Sentencing: "Falsehood is Wrong... Confirming a Natural Principle"

'His very existence is a threat to South Korea'
"An ordinary politician would retire from politics"

On the 15th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated that it was fortunate that the court confirmed the obvious principle that "lying is wrong" when Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was sentenced to a penalty resulting in loss of his parliamentary seat in the first trial of a violation of the Public Official Election Act.

In a Facebook post titled "His very existence is a threat to the Republic of Korea," Mayor Oh criticized, "It is lamentable that the national energy is being consumed to the extent that the government and the National Assembly have come to a halt over such an obvious matter," adding, "Lee Jae-myung's very existence greatly regresses our society and further threatens the Republic of Korea."

He continued, "As a local government head, I have encountered various development projects, but the change of use in Baekhyeon-dong and the Daejang-dong development corruption are truly incomprehensible and unacceptable," and pointed out, "For an ordinary politician, this would be an issue warranting a public apology and retirement from politics as soon as it surfaced."

He added, "The Republic of Korea must move forward. We must not sink after hitting the 'rock' called Lee Jae-myung," and said, "The Democratic Party should now return to 'normal politics' for the people, rather than 'abnormal politics' used for futile shielding."

Meanwhile, Lee, who was indicted for false statements under the Public Official Election Act due to false remarks made during the last presidential election, was sentenced in the first trial to a suspended prison term corresponding to a penalty resulting in loss of his parliamentary seat. If this ruling is upheld by the Supreme Court, Lee will be unable to run in the next presidential election scheduled for March 2027. Lee has announced his intention to immediately appeal.
