Smoking is a major cause of various diseases such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and various cancers. To prevent these and increase the success rate of smoking cessation, the National Health Insurance Service operates a smoking cessation treatment support program. Medical institutions participating in the program are evaluated based on the number of participants in smoking cessation, completion rates, and other factors, and excellent cooperative institutions are selected accordingly.
Hwang Hye-rim, Head of the Comprehensive Health Screening Center at Daedong Hospital (Family Medicine Specialist), stated, “While the individual's will is the most important factor in quitting smoking, personalized counseling considering the age of smoking initiation, duration of smoking, daily smoking amount, and nicotine dependence, along with appropriate medication prescriptions and smoking cessation information provided by medical staff, help increase the success rate of quitting smoking. Therefore, if it is difficult to quit alone, we recommend seeking help from medical institutions.”
She added, “The Comprehensive Health Screening Center staff’s efforts to provide customized treatment considering the individual characteristics of patients to enhance satisfaction with smoking cessation treatment have resulted in being selected as an excellent institution for six consecutive times. We will continue to strive to improve the health of local residents.”
Any citizen wishing to receive smoking cessation treatment can be supported up to three times a year. They receive medical consultations and counseling for 8 to 12 weeks and are supported with costs for smoking cessation medications or aids. For the first and second visits, patients pay 20% of the cost, and from the third visit onward, the co-payment is waived.
Additionally, applicants who complete all programs, including six counseling sessions and meeting the required medication days for each treatment, can receive a refund of the co-payments made during the first and second visits. Smoking cessation cooperative institutions can be confirmed through the National Health Insurance Service’s smoking cessation treatment support program.
