A man in his 50s who, while intoxicated, mistook a railway track for a road and drove along it was apprehended by the police.
On the 14th, the Sejong Northern Police Station announced that they have booked and are investigating a man in his 50s, Mr. A, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).
Mr. A is suspected of driving under the influence around 9:54 PM on the 13th, entering the railway crossing in Jochiwon-eup, Sejong City, and driving approximately 600 meters along the Chungbuk Line towards the vicinity of Cheongju Osong Station.
The police received a report stating "a car is driving on the railway tracks" and upon arriving at the scene, found Mr. A's passenger car stuck on the tracks with a flat tire, unable to move.
According to the police investigation, after entering the crossing in Jochiwon-eup, Sejong City, Mr. A mistook the railway tracks for a car road and drove along the tracks with a flat tire up to near Osong Station. It was also revealed that before driving on the tracks, Mr. A had a collision with the side mirror of an oncoming vehicle while driving in Jochiwon-eup and fled the scene.
Breathalyzer results showed Mr. A's blood alcohol concentration was 0.142%, which is at the license cancellation level. During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he mistook the way while trying to avoid a drunk driving checkpoint.
Fortunately, there were no trains running on the nearby tracks at the time, so the incident did not lead to an accident.
Korea Railroad Corporation stated that since there was no damage to facilities or other harm, they do not plan to file a separate complaint. A police official said, "We are investigating the detailed circumstances of the vehicle collision and other aspects of the incident."
