Samsung Electronics Tops with 9 Trillion KRW Operating Profit
SK Hynix Shows the Largest Year-on-Year Growth
Operating profit of our major conglomerates in the third quarter of this year increased by about 34% compared to the same period last year. The fortunes of companies varied by industry. While the operating profits of information and communication technology (IT), electrical, and electronics sectors such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix increased more than fivefold, the petrochemical sector turned to losses due to weak oil prices amid concerns over a global economic slowdown.
According to CEO Score, a corporate data research institute, on the 15th, a survey of the third-quarter performance of 332 out of the top 500 domestic companies by sales that submitted quarterly reports by the previous day showed that their operating profit in the third quarter was 58.6151 trillion KRW, up 33.9% from 43.7881 trillion KRW in the same period last year. Their third-quarter sales amounted to 776.9907 trillion KRW, an increase of 4.4% compared to 743.9593 trillion KRW in the same period last year.
By company, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix had large operating profits. Samsung Electronics recorded an operating profit of 9.1834 trillion KRW in the third quarter of this year, a 277.4% increase from 2.4335 trillion KRW in the same period last year. The second place was SK Hynix, which succeeded in turning a profit in the third quarter, recording an operating profit of 7.03 trillion KRW.
Following them were Hyundai Motor Company (3.5809 trillion KRW), Korea Electric Power Corporation (3.3961 trillion KRW), Kia (2.8813 trillion KRW), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (1.6012 trillion KRW), HMM (1.4614 trillion KRW), Hyundai Mobis (908.6 billion KRW), Samsung Life Insurance (796.2 billion KRW), and LG Electronics (751.9 billion KRW) in order of operating profit size.
On the other hand, the company with the largest operating loss in the third quarter was SK Energy (-534.8 billion KRW). Following were S-Oil (-414.9 billion KRW), Lotte Chemical (-413.6 billion KRW), GS Caltex (-352.9 billion KRW), HD Hyundai Oilbank (-268.1 billion KRW), SK Incheon Petrochem (-189.4 billion KRW), Hanwha TotalEnergies (-166.8 billion KRW), and Kumho Construction (-157.4 billion KRW).
Compared to the third quarter of last year, SK Hynix showed the largest increase in operating profit. Riding the wave of AI expansion, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and corporate SSD demand, SK Hynix's third-quarter operating profit increased by 8.822 trillion KRW compared to the same period last year. Samsung Electronics ranked second with an increase of 6.7499 trillion KRW.
Following were Korea Electric Power Corporation (1.3995 trillion KRW↑), HMM (1.3856 trillion KRW↑), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (693.1 billion KRW↑), LG Display (581.5 billion KRW↑), Kyobo Life Insurance (394.7 billion KRW↑), Korea East-West Power (274 billion KRW↑), Korea Western Power (225.7 billion KRW↑), and Korea Southern Power (222.1 billion KRW↑) in order of significant operating profit increases. Conversely, GS Caltex had the largest decrease in operating profit in the third quarter compared to the same period last year, down by 1.5582 trillion KRW.
Following were S-Oil (1.2738 trillion KRW↓), SK Energy (1.2697 trillion KRW↓), HD Hyundai Oilbank (587.3 billion KRW↓), SK Incheon Petrochem (498.7 billion KRW↓), Lotte Chemical (441.7 billion KRW↓), Hanwha TotalEnergies (425.7 billion KRW↓), Samsung SDI (366.1 billion KRW↓), LG Chem (362 billion KRW↓), and POSCO (287.8 billion KRW↓) in order of large operating profit decreases.
Among the top 10 companies with the largest decrease in operating profit in the third quarter, eight were in the petrochemical sector. It is analyzed that the operating profits of petrochemical companies decreased across the board due to weak oil prices caused by the global economic recession.
