"Specific Support Plans for Previous Regions Must Be Established"
At the administrative audit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, a claim was made that the Ministry of National Defense's compensation for military airport noise should be made more realistic.
On the 14th, Park Sugi, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party, Gwangsan 5), stated during the administrative audit of the Gwangju Military Airport Integrated Transportation Bureau, "The Ministry of National Defense's compensation for military airport noise, which was set based on standards from 20 years ago, needs to be updated," adding, "The current maximum monthly compensation of 60,000 won is not realistic. In particular, there should be grounds to expand the scope from mainly residential areas to include workplaces, schools, and other actual victims during working hours."
Park explained, "By making the compensation more realistic and strengthening the Ministry of National Defense's responsibility, we can expect the noise damage compensation plan for residents in the relocation areas to become more practical," and added, "This will also increase the momentum and persuasiveness of the relocation project."
Meanwhile, Gwangju City, along with Jeollanam-do Province and Muan County, has judged that the existing method of the 'tripartite dialogue' cannot find a clear solution, and although it requested support from the government and the Democratic Party, there has been little progress.
In this regard, Park pointed out that Gwangju City has been passive in communicating with the residents of Muan County, emphasizing that instead of one-sided promotional activities, the city should listen to the voices of Muan residents and engage in sincere dialogue.
Park added, "The deepening conflict between local governments is also the responsibility of Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijeong, who left emotional scars on Jeollanam-do and Muan County with remarks such as 'Hamheungchasa' and 'conscience delinquent,'" and said, "Efforts to restore trust and the establishment of more concrete plans for support projects in the relocation areas, along with active explanations, are necessary."
