New Supreme Court Justice Candidates: Jo Han-chang, Hong Dong-gi, Ma Yong-ju, Shim Dam (Update)

The Supreme Court Justice Nomination Committee, after a meeting on the afternoon of the 14th, recommended 4 candidates out of a total of 37 Supreme Court justice candidates to Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae as nominees.

The recommended candidates are lawyer Cho Han-chang (59, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 18), who served as a court president; Hong Dong-gi (56, class 22), senior presiding judge of the Seoul High Court; and Ma Yong-ju (55, class 23) and Shim Dam (55, class 24), presiding judges of the Seoul High Court. This pool of candidates consists of current and former judges.

Chief Justice Cho plans to disclose their major rulings and work history, gather opinions from inside and outside the judiciary by the 19th, then select one candidate to recommend for appointment to President Yoon Seok-yeol.

Meanwhile, the new Supreme Court justice will succeed Justice Kim Sang-hwan, who will retire on December 27.

Lee Kwang-hyung, president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and chair of the nomination committee, said, "We have strived to recommend candidates who possess not only legal expertise but also a firm commitment to protecting the freedoms and rights of the people, a strong belief in protecting socially vulnerable and minority groups, inclusiveness that embraces the diverse values of our society, insight to understand the changes of the times, and morality and integrity that meet the expectations of the public."
