This agreement was promoted to proactively respond to global environmental regulations such as RE100, rising energy prices, and the implementation of the Distributed Energy Act, as well as domestic and international energy environment changes, to expand the foundation of advanced knowledge industries through renewable energy and create a sustainable city.
The main contents of the agreement include ▲building a foundation for an energy self-reliant city in Chuncheon ▲forming a consultative body to promote renewable energy projects for achieving carbon neutrality ▲cooperating in developing renewable energy supply and conversion projects using idle land, among others.
Through this agreement, Chuncheon City and KHNP plan to establish a renewable energy power generation facility infrastructure of 500MW by 2050, focusing on solar power, which is a renewable energy source suitable for Chuncheon.
Chuncheon City will provide project sites and administrative support such as permits, while KHNP will take charge of comprehensive project management including planning, construction, and operation.
Initially, industrial complexes will be utilized, and then the projects will expand sequentially to national and public lands, followed by agrivoltaics expected to improve farm income. The electricity produced will be supplied to nearby industrial complexes, which is expected to activate the attraction of companies centered on advanced industries where renewable energy use is essential, such as achieving RE100.
In particular, it is expected to greatly contribute to attracting companies to newly developed industrial sites like the Corporate Innovation Park and Geodu General Industrial Complex, as well as strengthening the competitiveness of aging industrial complexes such as Hupyeong General Industrial Complex.
Furthermore, it is anticipated to play a significant role in creating a carbon-neutral city in Chuncheon, aiming to reduce 1.51 million tons of greenhouse gases by 2050, along with providing affordable and stable power supply through the activation of distributed energy.
Mayor Yuk Dong-han of Chuncheon said, "Building a renewable energy infrastructure is essential for attracting advanced industries and creating a sustainable city," adding, "Chuncheon City and KHNP will work together to do their best to achieve the best results in establishing an advanced knowledge industry city through eco-friendly energy."
