Ulsan Office of Education Develops Ulsan-style AI Teaching and Learning Tool

Nationwide First Teacher Direct Participation, Customized Learning Provided

Function and Class Application Cases Introduced at Public Academic Conference

The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Chang-su) has developed ‘Wooriai (AI) Teaching and Learning Service,’ an AI-based teaching and learning tool tailored to Ulsan’s educational needs.

With a project budget of over 100 million KRW, the development of the ‘Wooriai (AI) Teaching and Learning Service’ began on October 9, 2023. After undergoing preliminary review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, security evaluation by the National Intelligence Service, and consultations with the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) and the National Information Society Agency, the development was completed on the 14th of this month.

This service is the first in the nation to be developed with direct participation from teachers, providing an optimized learning experience tailored to each student’s individual learning level and needs.

It includes 101 types of lesson models with questions across various subjects such as Korean, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and English.

Wooriai (AI) is a smart tool that answers questions as if it were a person. When students ask something they are curious about, it provides immediate answers and can assist with solving difficult problems.

For teachers, it offers various ideas to help design effective lessons and supports enhancing students’ learning interest and creative thinking by utilizing generative AI technology.

The Ulsan Office of Education will hold an academic conference on the 15th at the JW Convention Center in Buk-gu to unveil the generative AI-based ‘Wooriai (AI) Teaching and Learning Service.’

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony, followed by the second session featuring a keynote lecture titled ‘The Power of Questions in the Era of Generative AI’ by Paul Kim, Associate Dean of Stanford Graduate School of Education, and the third session will be a future education sharing meeting. Approximately 2,500 participants, including officials from the Ministry of Education and 11 metropolitan and provincial offices of education, will attend.

At this academic conference, the Ulsan Office of Education plans to introduce the diverse functions of the Wooriai (AI) service and examples of its application in classroom teaching, sharing vivid experiences from teachers in the field. It will also present a vision for the future of generative AI-based education and explore the proper direction for future education.

Jung Je-young, President of the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), said, “The Wooriai (AI) Teaching and Learning Service, born from the passion of Ulsan teachers and the efforts of the Ulsan Office of Education, has opened a new horizon for future education. We will actively cooperate to build a digital education environment for nurturing future talents.”

Superintendent Cheon Chang-su stated, “The Wooriai (AI) Teaching and Learning Service will realize personalized education for students and lead the digital transformation of Ulsan education, contributing to preparing for future society.”

From the 14th to the 15th, in Dong-gu and Buk-gu, Ulsan, the ‘AI Customized Teaching and Learning Infrastructure Establishment Project Council,’ jointly promoted by the Ministry of Education and 11 metropolitan and provincial offices of education, will be held. These events will serve as an opportunity to explore new possibilities in education in the AI era and further advance Ulsan education.
