A netizen's story was shared about a wife who, in charge of managing the family’s assets, invested in stocks without consulting her husband and lost 400 million won that they had saved over a lifetime, leading to thoughts of divorce.
On the 11th, an anonymous office worker posted a message titled "My wife lost 400 million won" on the workplace anonymous community Blind. The writer, Mr. A, who identified himself as a father of two, began by saying, "I have nowhere else to complain, so I’m posting here."
Mr. A said, "My wife manages our household finances. When my salary comes in, I send it all to her without any allowance, and I use her card for personal expenses," adding, "I entrusted all asset management to my wife."
He continued, "There was a new loan called a newborn loan with a very low interest rate. Since housing prices in the provinces had dropped a lot, I was looking into buying a house to escape the three-year lease system. To minimize the loan amount, I asked my wife how much money we had saved, but she didn’t give me a proper answer."
Mr. A said his wife kept changing her story with various excuses. He said, "At first, she said she had lent some money to a friend due to personal circumstances. When I asked, 'What made you trust him to lend money?' she changed her story to say, 'Actually, I didn’t lend all of it, just a few tens of millions won.' When I asked how much was left, she then said, 'Someone renting my mother-in-law’s house suddenly moved out, so I lent the deposit money temporarily.'"
Eventually, when Mr. A demanded to see the account, his wife finally confessed the truth. She tearfully admitted, "Last year, I bought 500 million won worth of stocks in a domestic listed company on the recommendation of a close friend who works at a securities firm, but I have lost 400 million won."
Mr. A said, "It feels like the sky is falling. That money is what we have saved over our entire lives," and appealed, "Everything feels like a dream and a lie." He also said, "That night, I suddenly couldn’t breathe and went to the emergency room, where I was diagnosed with panic disorder."
He added, "I found out that this company probably has no chance of recovering," and asked, "Is this a valid reason for divorce?" He lamented, "I can’t understand why she made such a decision without consulting me, and I’m very angry. I have no idea what to do in this situation."
Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "She should have consulted before making such a big financial decision; I’m more upset that she decided alone," and "Investment always carries risks, but this is unfortunate."
