Tesla Vehicle Fire in Canada Kills 4: "Doors Would Not Open" Reuters Yonhap News

Four occupants died in a fire involving a Tesla vehicle in Canada. It is reported that the occupants could not escape because the car doors did not open after the fire broke out.

According to the British Daily Mail on the 11th (local time), a fire occurred in a Tesla Y model vehicle in Toronto, Canada, on October 24. Four out of five occupants failed to escape and died. The only survivor was a woman in her 20s. The occupants could not escape because the doors did not open after the vehicle caught fire. The Daily Mail reported that the sole survivor was rescued after Rick Harper, a Canadian postal worker, broke the car window with a metal rod.

Local police stated, "The vehicle was traveling at high speed on Lake Shore Boulevard in Toronto when it crashed into a guardrail, causing the accident." Investigators are currently examining the exact cause of the accident.

Tesla vehicles require pressing a button instead of using a handle to open the door. However, if an accident such as a fire causes the power to be cut off, the doors may not open. Tesla vehicles have an emergency manual door release button, but this feature is not widely known. To use this function, the interior panel of the vehicle must be removed, and then a cable underneath must be pulled to open the door.

This accident is expected to intensify safety concerns regarding Tesla vehicles. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nine investigations are currently underway related to Tesla Y models, including issues such as brake malfunctions and sudden unintended acceleration.
