Professor Kim Myung-joo of Seoul Women's University Appointed as the First Director of the AI Safety Research Institute

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 12th that Professor Kim Myung-joo of the Department of Information Security at Seoul Women's University has been appointed as the inaugural director of the AI Safety Research Institute.

Director Kim Myung-joo, an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and reliability with a background in computer engineering, has emphasized the safe and responsible development and use of AI through roles such as head of the RAISE (Right AI Research Center), president of the International AI Ethics Association, and chair of the AI Ethics Policy Forum.


He is also active as a specialist member of the OECD GPAI (Global Partnership on AI), participating in international discussions.


Based on his expertise and experience in AI ethics and safety, Director Kim plans to develop the AI Safety Research Institute into a leading institution and to communicate and collaborate with domestic AI industry, academia, and research sectors as well as AI safety research institutes worldwide.


The term of the AI Safety Research Institute director is three years from the date of appointment, and Director Kim will serve from today until November 11, 2027.
