KT SAT Successfully Launches Mugunghwa Satellite 6A Aboard SpaceX Rocket

Starting Q1 Next Year, Service in Korea
Responding to Satellite Communication Demand from Military and Government Agencies

KT Group's satellite specialist subsidiary KT SAT announced on the 12th that it successfully launched the Mugunghwa Satellite 6A aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 launch vehicle on the 11th (local time).

Launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, USA, the 6A satellite is a new satellite launched about seven years after KT SAT launched the Mugunghwa Satellites 5A and 7A in 2017.


The 6A satellite is scheduled to provide official services within Korea starting from the first quarter of next year. It will begin full-scale data and broadcasting services targeting domestic customers such as the military, government, and broadcasters. In particular, it will respond to the increasing satellite communication demands of military and government agencies, including operational communication networks and emergency/disaster networks.


It will take about one month for the 6A satellite to reach its service orbit. Afterward, until the end of this year, tests in orbit (IOT) and quality verification will be conducted through the satellite control system KOSMOS, completing preparations.

KOSMOS is a satellite control system developed by KT SAT for the first time based on its own software capabilities and control technology. KOSMOS differs from existing systems in that it supports satellite big data analysis functions. Satellite big data analysis utilizes accumulated satellite data to shorten interference source detection time and support proactive fault prediction.


This helps maintain a stable communication state, making it a representative differentiating feature of the 6A satellite control system.


The 6A satellite serves as the second satellite for the government's Korean Airborne Satellite Service (KASS), and is expected to play a role in providing accurate location information nationwide by correcting GPS location errors in real time.


Seo Young-su, CEO of KT SAT, stated, "Through this satellite launch, we have further expanded our competitiveness in geostationary orbit services, and in the future, by combining it with competitiveness in low Earth orbit satellite services, we will lead the domestic satellite business."
