Gyeonggi Fire Department Publishes Braille Book on National Action Guidelines for Disaster Types

The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters has published a braille book containing national action guidelines for different types of disasters.

The Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 12th that they recently released an e-book for the visually impaired based on the "54 Types of National Action Guidelines for Disasters" created last year to enable quick response to various disasters and accidents that may occur in daily life.

The national action guidelines for disaster types were the first disaster response manual created nationwide last year by the Fire and Disaster Headquarters in collaboration with 181 private professional instructors and experts. It includes action guidelines for 54 types of disasters ranging from apartment fires to drone accidents and camping site incidents, as well as key disaster information such as accident cases, prevention rules, and how to use firefighting facilities. It is characterized by its simple composition using illustrations and images so that anyone can easily learn it.

The Fire and Disaster Headquarters judged that visually impaired people, who are vulnerable to disasters, would benefit from using the national action guidelines, and applied for the National Library for the Disabled’s "Publications Accessibility Support Project" in June, where it was selected. Recently, they introduced an e-book in PDF format for the visually impaired.

The e-book provides sentences, images, and symbols on computer or mobile screens in audio form, making it easy and convenient for visually impaired people to use.

The Fire and Disaster Headquarters provided the materials to related organizations such as welfare centers for the visually impaired and also posted them on their website (119.gg.go.kr). After downloading a program called a screen reader, users can access the Fire and Disaster Headquarters website and click on National Action Guidelines → Action Guidelines by Type at the top.

A representative from the Fire and Disaster Headquarters said, "By applying for and being selected in the 'Publications Accessibility Support Project' led by the National Library for the Disabled, the national action guidelines e-book for the visually impaired was created," adding, "We will continue to prepare effective measures so that disaster-vulnerable groups are not left out."
