"From the preparation period before childbirth to recovery and raising young children, everything was guaranteed, allowing me to focus on my family with peace of mind."
Attorney Kwak Ji-yeon of Law Firm (Limited) Daeryun returned to the office in May after a 10-month parental leave. When she first found out she was pregnant, she was filled with worries. Lawyers are not exempt from career interruptions caused by so-called 'pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare' (PCC).
However, contrary to expectations, the company's response was very positive. The company conveyed that she could fully focus on childcare, and thanks to this consideration, Attorney Kwak was able to prepare for childbirth with ease.
Attorney Kwak said, "In reality, even if there are systems in place, if the atmosphere makes it difficult to use them, one inevitably has to return to work. I was grateful that I could come back and work at the desired time after my leave."
Operating a Systematic Case Management System to Prevent Work Gaps
Daeryun supports the balance between work and family life through the implementation of various maternal protection support policies.
Being a 'family-friendly law firm' is one of Daeryun's core management principles. In particular, it actively supports women going through the PCC process to maintain stable company life and develop their careers after returning.
Notably, after returning, various assistance is provided to help adapt to work, including receiving know-how on balancing work and childcare from senior returnees. Furthermore, to alleviate financial concerns for employees on parental leave, a 'Parental Home-Working System' has been established.
As a result of proactively implementing maternal protection policies, Daeryun's maternal protection policy is regarded as a welfare role model within the law firm industry.
Regarding concerns about work gaps that may arise when using maternal protection systems, a Daeryun representative said, "Usually, at least three and up to twenty specialists are assigned to a single case. A veteran attorney, formerly a chief judge or chief prosecutor, oversees the entire case, and a team of specialized attorneys continuously communicates and shares the situation, so there is no concern about gaps."
Supporting Work-Family Balance... Male Lawyers and Staff Also Freely Use the System
In the law firm industry, male lawyers often do not benefit from work-family balance policies. In fact, a survey conducted last year by the Korean Bar Association targeting 478 male lawyers found that 30% responded that they had not taken any paternity leave.
Daeryun's welfare system is also open to male lawyers. Attorney Kim Tae-hwan, one of the beneficiaries of male parental leave, said, "I was encouraged to use the maternal protection system regardless of gender and found it very useful. It is an essential system for parents with young children, and guaranteeing it itself is a very good welfare benefit."
This policy applies without exception to regular employees as well as lawyers. Currently, several employees are using shortened working hours for childcare or have returned after childbirth and childcare leave and have been working for several years.
Daeryun plans to further expand welfare systems to support work-family balance so that employees can continue their work without worries about childbirth and childcare.
Meanwhile, Daeryun is actively promoting employment policies for youth and middle-aged individuals in addition to maternal protection systems.
Regardless of gender or age, the firm aims to discover talented individuals with outstanding abilities in their fields of support, contribute to community development, and achieve sustainable growth.
