Ulsan City, Groundbreaking Ceremony for 'Nongso-Gangdong Road Construction' Connecting East and West

Travel Time Between Ulju Duseo and Buk-gu Gangdong Reduced from 1 Hour to 20 Minutes

A new road connecting the east and west of Ulsan is opening.

On the 11th at 3 p.m., Ulsan City will hold the ‘Nongso-Gangdong Road Construction Groundbreaking Ceremony’ at Nongsong Sports Complex in Buk-gu.

The event will be attended by about 600 people including Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, Acting Chairperson of the City Council Kim Jong-seop, National Assembly member Yoon Jong-oh, Buk-gu District Mayor Park Cheon-dong, city council members, district council members, residents, and construction officials. The program includes a progress report, video screening, and a button-pressing ceremony.

This project involves constructing an 11.1 km long, 4-lane road from Sangandong in Buk-gu to the Gangdong Interchange on National Route 31, linked with the opening of the Ulsan Outer Ring Expressway that connects the newly established Buk-Ulsu Junction (JCT) and Gadae Interchange (IC) on the Gyeongbu Expressway in Duseo-myeon, Ulju-gun.

With a total project cost of 633.2 billion KRW, this is the largest road project in Ulsan’s history. Upon completion, travel time from Duseo in Ulju-gun to Gangdong in Buk-gu is expected to be drastically reduced from one hour to 20 minutes.

Key components of the project include the construction of Changpyeong Interchange to facilitate smooth freight transport on Saneop-ro and improve accessibility to the Buk-Ulsan Station area development site. Additionally, Hogye Interchange will be built to enhance access to Auto Valley-ro.

Furthermore, nine bridges and five tunnels are planned to minimize environmental impact caused by the road construction.

Notably, this project aims to increase the participation rate of local construction companies, expecting an increase of 35.4 billion KRW in contracts awarded to local firms and the creation of 333 new jobs for local workers.

An official from Ulsan City stated, “In connection with the Ulsan Outer Ring Expressway, we plan to establish an optimal traffic network linking major arterial roads such as the Gyeongbu Expressway, Donghae Expressway, Iye-ro, Saneop-ro, Auto Valley-ro, and National Route 31. Once the Nongso-Gangdong road opens, it is expected to alleviate downtown traffic congestion by securing a bypass route and promote the development of the Gangdong tourist complex.”
