"Threatening to 'Report to Workplace,' Business Owner Extorts Money from Public Official Involved in Soliciting Sex"

Extorted Over 20 Million Won in 23 Incidents
Committed Crime After Debt Collection Pressure from Loan Shark

A 30-year-old business owner who extorted a large sum of money by threatening a public official involved in prostitution was sentenced to prison.


According to Yonhap News on the 10th, Chief Judge Kang Hyun-ho of the Criminal Division 4 at Cheongju District Court sentenced Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of extortion and attempted extortion, to 1 year and 6 months in prison.


Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of threatening public official Mr. B, who visited the prostitution establishment he operated as a customer, from November 11 to December 16, 2022, saying, "I will report your prostitution to your workplace and get you dismissed," and extorting money.

Mr. A also threatened, "If you don't pay, I will go to your workplace and expose you." It is known that through this method, Mr. A received about 20 million won from Mr. B over 23 occasions.


Police investigation revealed that Mr. A committed the crime to repay debts after being pressured by loan sharks while operating the prostitution business in September 2022.


Chief Judge Kang explained, "Even after extorting more than 20 million won, he continued to threaten the victim to obtain more money." He added, "Considering the circumstances of the crime, the nature of the offense is very serious," and stated the sentencing rationale, "Taking into account that the victim likely suffered considerable mental distress and that the damage has not been restored."
