The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense also recognized the need for close cooperation in April this year to build an ‘elite advanced strong military’ in response to scientific technology, digital innovation, and future warfare environments, and signed an agreement to ‘strengthen cooperation in the field of defense science and technology.’ This included promoting the growth of technologies and industries necessary for future battlefields such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, space, and cyber.

As the advancement of cutting-edge technology is leading changes in the rapidly evolving future defense environment, the Naval Education Command has joined hands with Gyeongnam National University to keep pace with the rapidly changing defense environment and to seek educational measures for soldiers in preparation for future warfare.

Last year, Gyeongnam National University was selected as the first ‘2023 Software (SW)-Centered University’ general track in the Gyeongnam and Ulsan regions by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and has been promoting a project worth a total of 22 billion KRW over eight years, funded by the national government, Gyeongnam Province, Changwon City, industry, and university funds.

In addition, centered on the Ulsan·Gyeongnam Regional Innovation Platform Smart Manufacturing ICT Project Group, the university is striving to develop various advanced technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things), big data, and artificial intelligence (AI), and to nurture digital convergence talents. As part of the university’s specialization, it is applying next-generation artificial intelligence, ‘super-large AI,’ to the manufacturing industry, which is the main industry of Gyeongsangnam-do, developing new manufacturing methods to lead Gyeongsangnam-do’s new growth engine industries. Through this, it was selected as a ‘2024 Glocal University Preliminary Designation’ university, which evaluates university competitiveness this year.

On this day, the two institutions promised to jointly strive for the education and development of defense artificial intelligence, and agreed to cooperate on ▲ jointly promoting and sharing necessary programs for the utilization of knowledge, information, and know-how for the development and exchange of defense science and technology (such as using the USG Open Meta Campus) ▲ efforts to cooperate and activate exchanges for academic events for education and technical information exchange.
