Icheon City Submits Science High School Application to Gyeonggi Office of Education

Mayor Kim Kyung-hee: "An Important Turning Point for Regional Education Development"

On the 7th, Icheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 8th that it had submitted an application for the first phase of preliminary designation as a Gyeonggi-type science high school to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.

The application, jointly prepared by the city and the Icheon Office of Education, reportedly includes the regional necessity for nurturing scientific talent and the strong determination of 240,000 Icheon citizens to attract a science high school, the city explained.

The designation of a science high school by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education was promoted based on the judgment that the single existing science high school in Uijeongbu is insufficient relative to the population in the province. The city explained that in the eastern Gyeonggi region, including Icheon, Yeoju, Gwangju, and Yangpyeong, there are no science high schools, specialized high schools, or autonomous private high schools, resulting in students not being guaranteed educational opportunities.

Kim Kyung-hee, mayor of Icheon, said, "Attracting a science high school will be an important turning point for the development of local education," adding, "Through this, we will provide diverse educational opportunities to students in the region and strengthen educational competitiveness in the field of science."

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to select the first phase of preliminary designation candidates by the end of this month, followed by second and third phase evaluations, and announce the final selection results in February next year.
