Putin: "Joint Military Exercises with North Korea Possible... It's a Matter to Watch"

Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned the possibility of joint military exercises between Russia and North Korea.

According to TASS news agency, President Putin said on the 7th (local time) at the Valdai Discussion Club plenary session held in Sochi, southern Russia, regarding joint military exercises with North Korea, "Why not? We will see." He referred to the 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty' signed between Russia and North Korea in June, adding, "The treaty also includes Article 4, which states mutual support if either party is attacked."

President Putin also reiterated that the 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty (North Korea-Russia Treaty)' signed with North Korea is aimed at regional stability. The Russian State Duma ratified this agreement at the end of last month. The agreement includes a provision that if either party suffers an armed invasion and enters a state of war, the other party will promptly provide military assistance in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations (UN) Charter and North Korea-Russia law.

Earlier, when speculation arose about a large-scale deployment of North Korean troops to Russia, President Putin cited the mutual military assistance clause in the North Korea-Russia treaty, stating, "What we do and how we do it under this clause is our business."

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a press conference after the European Political Community (EPC) summit held in Budapest, Hungary, on the same day, stating that some of the 11,000 North Korean troops deployed in Russia's Kursk region have been engaged in combat, resulting in North Korean casualties. He added that he believes more North Korean troops will be deployed to Russia if corresponding countermeasures are not taken. However, he did not specify the number of North Korean casualties.
