Proactive Response to Abnormal Climate Events like Typhoons and Tsunamis
Comprising 5 Exhibition Halls and 1 Special Screening Room
Jeong Gi-myeong, mayor of Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do, made a preliminary visit on the 7th to the National Yeosu Marine Meteorological Science Museum, the first in the nation themed on marine meteorology, which is set to open on the 21st of next month.
Operated by the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, the Marine Meteorological Science Museum is located on a 5,292㎡ site in Gonghwa-dong, Yeosu, with one basement floor and three above-ground floors, totaling 5,376㎡ in floor area. Yeosu City provided 7.2 billion KRW for the land acquisition cost.

The National Yeosu Marine Meteorological Science Museum is a specialized scientific facility designed to proactively respond to abnormal climate phenomena such as the increasing number of typhoons, tsunamis, and heavy rains each year, and to offer hands-on experiences with marine meteorology.
It consists of five exhibition halls?the ‘Weather Play Experience Hall’, ‘Marine Meteorological Phenomena Hall’, ‘Marine Meteorological Observation Hall’, ‘Marine Climate Change Hall’, and ‘Media Art Hall’?as well as one special screening room, holding the largest number of contents in the country.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong stated, “The National Yeosu Marine Meteorological Science Museum will serve as an educational and cultural space for marine weather and climate, providing valuable experiential opportunities for future generations,” and added, “We will develop it as new tourism content in connection with the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo.”
Meanwhile, Yeosu City plans to promote pre-experience and viewing opportunities for all city hall employees for 19 days from the 11th of this month to the 17th of next month, in consultation with the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, to enhance public officials’ capabilities and to publicize the facility.
