Goyang City Signs Business Agreement to Promote Smart Mobility and Aerospace Industries

Establishing a Cooperative Relationship for Economic Free Zone Designation between Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology and Korea Aerospace University

Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 7th that on the 6th, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology and Korea Aerospace University to ensure the successful designation of the Goyang Free Economic Zone and to promote the smart mobility and aerospace industries.

The signing ceremony was attended by Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City; Kim Byung-seok, President of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology; and Heo Hee-young, President of Korea Aerospace University. The attendees shared the vision for the Goyang Free Economic Zone and agreed to establish a collaborative network that consolidates the expertise and resources of each institution to successfully advance the core strategic industries of smart mobility and aerospace.


Through this agreement, Goyang City, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, and Korea Aerospace University plan to cooperate on △ revitalizing the smart mobility and aerospace industries and establishing a global industry-academia-research cooperation model △ nurturing talent related to smart mobility and aerospace industries and providing administrative and technical support △ creating demonstration complexes such as test beds within the zone upon designation as a Free Economic Zone △ building an innovation cluster base for smart mobility and aerospace industries and reflecting it in planning.


Kim Byung-seok, President of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, stated, “Our institute is conducting research related to smart mobility, including space industry, UAM vertiports, and autonomous driving. The designation of the Goyang Free Economic Zone will be a driving force for national development as well as for Goyang City. We will strive to contribute to technological advancement through cooperation with Goyang City and Korea Aerospace University.”


Heo Hee-young, President of Korea Aerospace University, said, “The Goyang Free Economic Zone seems to be gradually taking shape. Goyang City is rapidly advancing in the smart mobility field, being designated as the K-UAM metropolitan area demonstration route and vertiport construction area. Korea Aerospace University possesses all the key elements related to smart mobility and aerospace industries, and we will continue ongoing exchanges and collaboration with the city and other institutions to specialize Goyang’s smart mobility and aerospace industries.”


Korea Aerospace University, a partner in this MOU, is the only specialized aviation university in Korea conducting advanced aerospace research, including through its Aerospace Industry Technology Research Institute. The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology is a global research institution in the construction technology field, conducting various studies to enhance the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving.


The city expects that strengthening the competitiveness of smart mobility and aerospace industries through collaboration with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology and Korea Aerospace University will greatly contribute to the designation of the Goyang Free Economic Zone. Furthermore, it anticipates that these two institutions will play a major role as key organizations in creating an innovative ecosystem for the Goyang Free Economic Zone.


Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, said, “I am pleased to sign this MOU with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology and Korea Aerospace University, which are representative institutions of Goyang City, to promote smart mobility and aerospace industries. I hope that these institutions will become strong partners to successfully build a smart mobility and aerospace industry cluster in Goyang City and create an environment conducive to attracting global companies and activating investment.”


Meanwhile, Goyang Special City is pursuing additional designation of the Free Economic Zone by selecting 'Bio and Precision Medicine,' 'K-Culture,' 'MICE,' and 'Smart Mobility' as its four core strategic industries to leap forward as a global self-sufficient city.
