Diagnosed with Malnutrition During Treatment, Tumor Successfully Removed After Over 10-Hour Surgery, Lawsuit Filed Against Doctors Who Failed to Detect Tumor
A man in Norway underwent surgery after discovering that the swollen belly he had mistaken for belly fat for 12 years was actually a massive 50cm malignant tumor. On the 5th (local time), British media such as the Daily Mail reported on a medical lawsuit filed by Thomas Kraut (59), who lives in Norway.

Previously, in 2012, Kraut visited a hospital due to symptoms of obesity, including a swollen belly, and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He was prescribed a diabetes and obesity treatment containing semaglutide. During the course of treatment, he lost a significant amount of weight, with noticeable fat loss on his face and arms. He was even diagnosed by doctors as being in a state of malnutrition.
However, the swollen belly did not reduce. Eventually, Kraut decided to undergo a sleeve gastrectomy in 2023. Sleeve gastrectomy is a type of bariatric surgery that involves making a long incision in the stomach to reduce its volume, thereby limiting food intake. During the surgery, medical staff discovered that Kraut’s belly was not soft like normal fat but was hard.
The medical team immediately conducted a CT scan. The results revealed that what was inside his belly was not fat but a huge rare malignant tumor. The tumor had already metastasized to his right kidney and part of his small intestine. It measured 20 inches (approximately 50.8cm) in length and weighed 60 pounds (about 27.2kg). Around September, Kraut underwent a 10-hour tumor removal surgery. Although the tumor was completely removed through surgery, the medical team explained that some malignant tissue still remained in his abdomen. The tissue itself was pressing on some vital organs, making complete removal too risky, so they could not remove it all.

Kraut, whose right kidney was severely damaged due to the tumor removal surgery, said, "I am relieved that the tumor was removed, but I am still anxious because there is cancerous tissue left inside my body." He is undergoing psychological therapy every two weeks and visits an oncology specialist twice a year for treatment. Meanwhile, Kraut and his wife filed a lawsuit against the doctors who failed to detect the tumor earlier, stating, "If the tumor had been discovered sooner, it could have been treated adequately."
