Yeongdeungpo-gu Mullae Neighborhood Park 'Waterway Rest Area' Development

The area around Mullae-dong, densely packed with ironworks shops scattering metal dust, is now bustling with nature and gardens.

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will open the ‘Waterway Rest Area’ within Mullae Neighborhood Park with an opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on the 12th.

The district remodeled the existing pond in Mullae Neighborhood Park to create the ‘Waterway Rest Area,’ an urban waterfront space where people can relax and play with water during the summer.

This Waterway Rest Area was created with a total budget of 600 million KRW, supported by national funds after Yeongdeungpo-gu was selected in the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Climate Crisis Vulnerable Groups and Regional Support Project’ competition, in accordance with the Mullae Park Renovation Master Plan.

The Waterway Rest Area, which has been reborn as an open waterfront space where residents can directly dip their feet and experience it, replaces the previously closed and temporarily used pond. It features a waterway design reflecting the patterns of flowing water and shaded areas to escape the heat on hot summer days.

Thus, Mullae Neighborhood Park, a resting place for residents, has been transformed through the ‘Waterway Rest Area’ into a distinctive and attractive space where people can enjoy leisure in harmony with nature and interact with many others.

The opening ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on the 12th next to the Rabbit Playground in Mullae Neighborhood Park. Before the main event, an ensemble performance will take place as a pre-event. Following this, a plaque unveiling ceremony will begin, and then the event ‘Plant One, Take One’ with residents will be held. The purpose is to expand everyday gardening through ‘plants’ as a medium and to envision a ‘sustainable garden city’ that residents can experience.

So far, the district has declared ‘Yeongdeungpo, the City of Flowers, Garden City Yeongdeungpo’ and has been creating lifestyle gardens filled with flowers, trees, and nature along roadsides, alleys, and various everyday places so that residents can encounter gardens close to their homes.

Among these efforts, the district expects the ‘Waterway Rest Area,’ which embraces the unique sensibility of waterfronts, to become a garden that harmonizes with nature and provides residents with relaxation and emotional stability.

Additionally, on the 13th, a ‘Bulb Planting Event’ will be held at the ‘Mullae-dong Flower Garden.’ The ‘Mullae-dong Flower Garden’ is a space returned to residents after 23 years and marks the beginning of ‘Garden City Yeongdeungpo.’ To welcome autumn, residents will plant bulbs such as tulips and daffodils to create a beautiful and vibrant garden for next spring. On that day, if visitors bring their pots, a horticultural therapy expert will also operate a ‘Visiting Companion Plant Clinic’ providing guidance on pest control, repotting, and plant care.

Furthermore, from November 2 to 23, every Saturday at 4 p.m., an ‘Autumn Mini Concert’ will be held at the ‘Mullae-dong Flower Garden.’ From classical music to familiar songs, it will offer beautiful melodies that adorn autumn for residents visiting the garden.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Gardens are a paradise in the city and a heaven on earth,” adding, “I hope that every corner you step into will be filled with the scent of flowers, making Yeongdeungpo a city of flowers and a sustainable garden city where residents can feel rest and healing, and that their lives become more relaxed and refreshed.”
