Korean-American Marilyn Strickland, 'Kim Sunja', Wins 3rd Term as U.S. Federal House Representative

Korean-American Marilyn Strickland (Korean name Kim Sun-ja), a U.S. federal House representative, has won her third term.

According to the AP News, Representative Strickland ran as the Democratic candidate for Washington State's 10th district in the federal House election held alongside the U.S. presidential election on the 5th (local time) and defeated Republican candidate Don Hewitt, securing her victory on the 6th. Strickland won with 58.3% of the vote, significantly ahead of Hewitt's 41.7%.

First elected to the federal House in 2020, Representative Strickland secured her third term by winning the House election this year following her 2022 victory.

She was born in Seoul in September 1962 to a Korean mother, Kim In-min, and a U.S. military father stationed in Korea, Willie Strickland. She moved to the United States at the age of one, studied business administration at the University of Washington, and earned an MBA from Clark Atlanta University.

Entering politics in 2007 as a Tacoma city council member, she served two years on the council before being elected mayor of Tacoma, a position she held from 2010 to 2018.

She holds the Korean name Kim Sun-ja.
