Construction of 9,600-Pyeong Logistics Center Begins... Completion Scheduled for September Next Year
Coupang is breaking ground on the Gimcheon Advanced Logistics Center (FC) in Gimcheon City, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Once completed, more than 500 local talents are expected to be directly employed.
On the afternoon of the 7th, Coupang announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gimcheon Advanced Logistics Center at the Gimcheon 1st General Industrial Complex in Eomo-myeon, Gimcheon City, Gyeongsangbuk-do. About 100 people, including Kim Chung-seop, Mayor of Gimcheon, Song Eon-seok, National Assembly member (Gimcheon City, Gyeongsangbuk-do), and Park Dae-jun, CEO of Coupang, will attend the event.
The newly initiated Gimcheon Advanced Logistics Center is scheduled for completion in September next year, with a total investment of over 100 billion KRW and a total floor area of approximately 9,600 pyeong. This center will be used as a Rocket Delivery hub for Gyeongsangbuk-do and the Gimcheon area. Coupang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gimcheon City in 2020 and has now begun construction.
The Gimcheon Advanced Logistics Center plans to directly employ about 500 people, with Coupang explaining that it expects a significant increase in youth employment. Additionally, it is expected to contribute to expanding local demand through the construction and operation of the logistics center and support the growth of local small and medium-sized businesses nationwide by securing sales channels. Furthermore, the expansion of Rocket Delivery zones in Gyeongbuk and Gimcheon is anticipated to enhance convenience for residents.
Kim Chung-seop, Mayor of Gimcheon, said, "I congratulate Coupang on the groundbreaking of the Gimcheon Advanced Logistics Center. Since the establishment of the logistics center is expected to bring positive ripple effects such as job creation in the local economy, we promise multifaceted administrative support for the smooth operation of the logistics center."
Assemblyman Song Eon-seok emphasized, "I sincerely welcome the fruition of the logistics center investment attraction efforts made together with the citizens of Gimcheon. The job creation and growth of small business owners resulting from Coupang's large-scale logistics center investment will not only breathe new life into the local economy but also serve as an opportunity for the remarkable development of the Gimcheon area."
Park Dae-jun, CEO of Coupang, said, "I sincerely thank National Assembly member Song Eon-seok, Mayor Kim Chung-seop of Gimcheon, and all related parties who actively supported the groundbreaking of the Gimcheon Advanced Logistics Center. We will strive even harder to become a model company that coexists and grows with the local community through revitalizing the local economy and creating quality jobs."
Meanwhile, this groundbreaking ceremony was held as part of Coupang's logistics investment plan announced earlier this year. Coupang plans to invest about 3 trillion KRW by 2026 to build additional logistics infrastructure in nine regions nationwide and directly employ more than 10,000 people. If this plan is realized, the total number of directly employed personnel in Coupang and its logistics and delivery subsidiaries (Coupang Fulfillment Service, Coupang Logistics Service) will increase to about 80,000, with more than 80% of the workforce expected to be based outside the Seoul area.
