"Prayers for the Success of the New Leader"... Former President Bush's Congratulations Without Mentioning Trump

Has Not Endorsed Trump in the Election So Far

On the 6th (local time), as former U.S. President Donald Trump's return to the White House was confirmed, former Republican President George W. Bush extended his congratulations, but notably did not mention Trump's name. President Bush has not expressed support for Trump in the presidential elections, leading some to speculate that their relationship is strained.

According to the AP and other sources, President Bush stated in a press release, "We join in wishing success to the new leader at all levels of government." However, he did not mention the name of the president-elect. He added, "The high voter turnout in this election is a sign of the health of our republic and the strength of our democratic institutions," and expressed gratitude on behalf of himself and Laura to election officials, poll workers, and volunteers who oversaw a free, fair, and secure election. He also thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their service to the country.

Although President Bush is the only living Republican president, he did not declare support for Trump in this election, as was also the case in 2016 and 2020. His statement on this day contained no personal remarks about Trump.

Dick Cheney, former vice president who led foreign and security policies during the Bush administration and is considered a prominent neoconservative in American politics, declared support for Vice President Harris in this election. In September, Cheney stated, "Trump must never again hold power. Trump is the most dangerous figure in 248 years of American history."

His daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney, also a leading anti-Trump figure, announced she would vote for Vice President Harris in this election. Since the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, she has been at the forefront of the anti-Trump faction within the Republican Party. After frequent clashes with the pro-Trump camp, she was ousted from Republican leadership and lost in the 2022 party primary.

Having campaigned with the Harris camp until the final stages of the election, Liz Cheney posted on social media upon Trump's victory confirmation, "Our country's democratic system worked well last night, and we have a new president-elect. Every American, whether they like the result or not, must recognize and accept the outcome of our election." She added, "Now, as citizens of the greatest country in the world, we bear a special responsibility over the next four years to do everything we can to uphold and sustain our Constitution, maintain the rule of law, and ensure our institutions stand strong."
