Dongseo University Hosts Busan Design Festival 'Busan Future Design Talk' + 'A Night Where Culture Blooms'

Glocal University 30 Dongseo University (President Jang Je-guk) recently announced on the 6th that the Busan Future Design Talk, hosted by Dongseo University, was held at BEXCO in Haeundae-gu, Busan as part of the Busan Design Festival.

The Busan Future Design Talk was planned for the first time this year by Dongseo University with the purpose of sharing passion and vision about design and creating a better future.

Dongseo University, which has built expertise and demonstrated remarkable achievements in the field of cultural contents, plans to further strengthen and expand this field following its selection as a Glocal University in August this year. Glocal University 30 is a government-led project where non-metropolitan universities and regions collaborate to nurture talent and create social value. Through the Busan Future Design Talk, Dongseo University announced its progressive move to expand channels for communication with the local community and the world.

The event, themed “Museum Seed: Future Potential of Cultural Spaces from a Design Perspective,” featured a keynote speech by Ico Migliore, Chair Professor at Dongseo University, professor at Politecnico di Milano, and co-CEO of Migliore+Servetto, followed by in-depth discussions with invited speakers.

In this lecture, Ico Migliore presented the future potential and blueprint of cultural spaces as revealed in his new book. He stated that museums have existed since ancient Greece and have greatly contributed to enriching the human spiritual world. However, he emphasized that museums now need bold conceptual shifts beyond traditional frameworks, and that artworks and activities within museums should serve as mediators that connect and communicate with human life.

Invited speaker Cheon Eui-young, professor of architecture at Kyonggi University and president of the Korean Institute of Architects, spoke about how the uniqueness of Korean culture has moved beyond being accepted on the global stage to now leading trends.

Kim Ju-yeon, dean of the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University and Seoul’s chief public designer, also highlighted museums from architectural and spatial perspectives, explaining the differences in how Europe and Korea interpret space and how these are creatively integrated in today’s global context.

Na Geon, professor at the Graduate School of International Design at Hongik University and Busan’s chief designer, suggested that by breaking down rigid stereotypes of museums and revisiting the original meaning of museums derived from the word “Muse,” museums can become more attractive places.

Following this, the subsequent event “A Night Where Culture Blooms,” hosted by Dongseo University, was held at Dongseo University’s Centum Campus.

Speakers who attended the Busan Future Design Talk, along with representatives from educational institutions, cultural and artistic organizations, and companies, had time for networking. It was especially an occasion to celebrate Dongseo University’s selection as a Glocal University and to reaffirm the commitment to future cooperation with the local community.

One of the highlights of the event was Ico Migliore’s drawing performance, which elevated the atmosphere of the reception. He also gifted 50 pre-prepared drawings to attendees, providing a special emotional experience. Through his work conveying the message “Time Traces,” Ico Migliore expressed that Dongseo University will continue to leave meaningful marks in broad spaces in the times ahead.
