Must Issue an Apology, Not a Statement, at the Press Conference
"Medical School Regular Admissions Quota Must Be Adjusted to Resolve the Issue"
Abolishing the Financial Investment Tax Violates Tax Justice and Principles
Former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min said on the 7th, addressing President Yoon Seok-yeol, who announced a press conference, "There must be a completely changed appearance, a genuine attitude of repentance, reflection, and apology, and the wording should reflect that."
On the 6th, former lawmaker Yoo appeared on SBS Radio and advised, "It may seem like a trivial matter, but the president sat alone in front of a nice desk and chair to deliver a statement, then moved to the press conference room and spoke in front of reporters. Tomorrow, he should stand in front of the reporters from the beginning, read an apology statement instead of a statement, sincerely and truthfully answer the reporters, and present reform measures that the public can accept."
Earlier, President Yoon planned to hold a press conference tomorrow to express his stance on various current issues. Initially, President Yoon intended to engage in communication with the public around the end of this month after completing his overseas tour schedule, but he decided to move the schedule forward. The Blue House stated regarding the press conference, "We plan to thoroughly explain all matters the public is curious about through a one-question-one-answer format."
Regarding this, former lawmaker Yoo said, "If the president sincerely apologizes at tomorrow's conference, talks about solutions to mistakes, and reveals reform measures that the public accepts, the crisis can be overcome and the administration can be renewed," adding, "If nothing changes, it will be a path to ruin. Tomorrow's press conference is the real last chance."
Regarding First Lady Kim, he said, "The best option is a special investigation," and added, "It would be best if a fair and objective special investigation could be appointed through bipartisan agreement. If President Yoon says he will not exercise his veto power and the ruling and opposition parties agree, it can be done." However, he said, "I don't think the president will accept it, so then measures must be taken to completely block First Lady Kim's involvement in state affairs in a way that at least half of the public can accept. In old-fashioned terms, it means sending her into exile or banishment to ensure the spouse does not interfere in state affairs."
He emphasized that reform across the entire administration is necessary. Former lawmaker Yoo said, "It seems necessary to replace the prime minister, deputy prime minister, ministers, and the chief of staff at Yongsan." Regarding the Blue House's policy that there will be no personnel changes for the sake of turning the tide, he harshly criticized, "Do you think you can safely complete your term if you do not try to change the situation and continue like this?"
Regarding the recent controversy involving Mr. Myeong Tae-gyun, former lawmaker Yoo introduced that he has known about him since the presidential primary. He said, "When I ran in the 2021 presidential candidate primary, I indirectly heard from several places that there was a person named Myeong Tae-gyun helping candidate Yoon (at that time). I heard that this person was messing with a public opinion poll called PNR, and every time I saw the survey, I heard it was strange. I advised people around me not to get close to him," he explained. Regarding the issue related to Mr. Myeong, he said, "President Yoon must honestly explain what happened between Mr. Myeong and the First Lady and what wrongdoing occurred," adding, "If not, what will you do if the recordings of Mr. Myeong come out and the voices of President Yoon or First Lady Kim continue to be heard?"
Former lawmaker Yoo said that a solution regarding the medical school issue should be presented at tomorrow's press conference. He said, "I hope medical reform is resolved before the economy," and added, "If I were to say one thing about the conference, I would give up insisting on 2,000 medical school quotas. The college entrance exam is next week, so I think the regular admissions quota in medical schools can be adjusted."
Meanwhile, he criticized Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, for expressing agreement with the abolition of the financial investment income tax. Former lawmaker Yoo said, "The financial investment income tax is not a matter of conservatives versus progressives but a matter of tax principles and justice," and criticized, "Is it right to not tax capital income while deducting taxes from earned income like a tight wallet?" He also pointed out, "How does Leader Lee plan to implement basic income? It doesn't make sense to propose basic income without taxing capital income."
