LG Electronics Wins Sejong Daewang Award for 'Vehicle Augmented Reality' Patent Technology

Recognized for Intuitive Driving Guidance Technology

LG Electronics announced on the 6th that it received the Sejong the Great Award, the grand prize of the '2024 Patent Technology Awards' hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), for its 'advanced patent for vehicle augmented reality (AR)'.

The Patent Technology Awards select patents registered with KIPO within the last 10 years that have contributed to enhancing the national industrial technology competitiveness, and award the patentees annually. LG Electronics was recognized for the excellence of its intuitive driving guidance technology that helps drivers easily understand complex driving information using AR.

Filed simultaneously in Korea and overseas in 2022, this patent is a technology that expresses vehicle information and route guidance on vehicle displays using AR-based three-dimensional (3D) graphics. The AR graphics can be freely separated, transformed, and combined to convey various information that was difficult to express before, such as direction and speed, uphill/downhill, route search status, and lane changes. The technology features enhanced accuracy through advanced data fusion and processing algorithms, and improved graphics and motion effects specialized for autonomous driving technology.

For example, when a vehicle needs to exit on a highway, an AR guide line is displayed on the vehicle display along with actual road footage, allowing the driver to easily follow the route. AR images indicating lane changes or route guidance are overlaid on the real road captured by the front camera, helping the driver intuitively understand and follow road conditions. This guidance is displayed not only on the head-up display (HUD) but also on the vehicle’s internal display, providing natural and clear directions similar to colored guide lines marked on the road surface.

This technology operates through an algorithm that processes data collected from the vehicle’s main sensors (cameras, driving assistance sensors, etc.), navigation data, and external data. It utilizes data obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technology to allow the vehicle to identify its own and surrounding objects’ positions and provide advance guidance on expected driving situations.

LG Electronics plans to develop products using this patent and supply them to global automobile manufacturers. The company aims to accelerate the expansion of its mobility software business while generating royalty revenue based on the AR solution.

Kim Dong-wook, Head of the B2B Advanced Technology Center at the CTO Division, said, "We will continue to develop the advanced AR patent technology to be applicable to all vehicle platforms and contribute to the expansion of our software business."
