The Korean Association of Medical School Professors (KAMSP) and the Emergency Committee of Medical School Professors (ECMSP) announced on the 5th the results of an urgent survey conducted from the 1st to the 4th targeting medical school professors nationwide.

According to the survey, out of 3,496 respondents, 3,365 (96.3%) answered that the medical school admission quota for next year should be frozen or reduced from the current quota of 3,058. Only 131 respondents (3.7%) said that admissions should proceed according to the planned increase.

Medical school professors warned that if the increase in medical school admissions is forced, approximately 7,600 first-year medical students will have to attend classes together next year. This number includes this year’s first-year medical students who had submitted leave of absence requests plus the incoming freshmen next year.

They stated, "It is said that the first-year premedical students mainly take liberal arts courses, so there is no problem, but that is not true," adding, "These students will face a situation where they cannot properly receive education and training for over 10 years, including both basic medical education and residency training after the premedical year."

They continued, "Just as the Ministry of Education respected university autonomy in handling leaves of absence, it should also guarantee university autonomy in admissions," and urged, "University presidents should recall their responsibilities and duties as educators and actively work to resolve the situation."

They emphasized, "As shown in the survey results, readjusting the medical school admission quotas for 2025 at each university is the immediate way to overcome the crisis in medical education and to allow students on leave to return to school."
