The city of Guri in Gyeonggi Province has entered the race to attract a science high school. The plan is to establish a science high school in the Guritopyeong 2 Public Housing District (Topyeong 2 District).

According to Guri City on the 4th, just nine days after starting a petition to attract a science high school to Topyeong 2 District on the 23rd of last month, over 4,000 citizens had signed. The city will continue to collect citizen signatures wishing for the attraction of the science high school in Topyeong 2 District through the city hall website and each neighborhood administrative welfare center until the 5th.

Guri City plans to sign a 'business agreement for the attraction and operation of the science high school in Topyeong 2 District' with the Guri-Namyangju Office of Education on the 7th. Based on the results of the citizen petition and other factors, the city intends to thoroughly prepare the application form for the public contest.

On the 30th of last month, Guri City held a preliminary meeting with the Guri-Namyangju Office of Education to form a working-level consultative body for attracting the science high school in Topyeong 2 District. They focused on key issues such as developing differentiation for the contest application and expanding diversity in science education, in line with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education’s announced plan for the first phase of preliminary designation for newly designated Gyeonggi-type science high schools.

A Guri City official said, "Attracting a science high school will be an important turning point serving as the focal point of the education system preparing for the future of the Guri area and playing a leading role in nurturing talent for advanced industries. We will concentrate all our efforts on creating the best environment, including fostering creative convergence talents by combining with the existing cultural and artistic infrastructure."

Meanwhile, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to receive applications from local governments wishing to attract Gyeonggi-type science high schools on the 8th, announce the results of the preliminary designation (phase 1) by the end of next month, and finalize the designation through the Special Purpose High School Designation and Operation Committee review (phase 2), Minister of Education’s consent, and Superintendent of Education’s designation and notification (phase 3).
