71.25% of Elementary School Teachers Commute to and from Gwangju
A significant number of education staff working in the Jeonnam region have been pointed out for not having changed their registered addresses to Jeonnam.
On the 4th, Choi Jeong-hoon, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Council (Democratic Party of Korea, Jangheung 4), pointed out during the administrative audit of the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education that a considerable number of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school staff have their registered addresses in regions other than Jeonnam.
On that day, Assemblyman Choi said, “A significant number of teachers in the Jeonnam region have their addresses registered in Gwangju. In particular, 71.25% of elementary school teachers working in Jeonnam do not reside within the district,” and asked, “Most of them commute from Gwangju, so I am curious about the reason.”
He added, “Children of Jeonnam education staff attend elementary school in Jeonnam but go to middle school in Gwangju,” and criticized, “Is this because they do not trust secondary education in Jeonnam and send their children to Gwangju?”
He continued, “Teachers working in Jeonnam sending their children to Gwangju is akin to not trusting their fellow teachers,” and argued, “While teachers themselves work in Jeonnam, sending their children to other regions requires much consideration.”
In response, Kim Young-shin, Director of the Education Bureau, avoided a direct answer, stating, “We will check this matter in detail and respond later.”
