Procurement Service Awarded Coast Guard 3000-ton Latest Patrol Ship Contract, Reaffirming Shipbuilding Excellence
HJ Heavy Industries (CEO Yu Sang-cheol) reaffirmed its status as a prestigious shipbuilder in the domestic shipbuilding industry by securing an order for the Coast Guard's 3,000-ton eco-friendly large patrol vessel.
The company signed a construction contract after winning the bid for the manufacture of one 3,000-ton patrol vessel ordered by the Public Procurement Service for 91.7 billion KRW.
The 3,000-ton patrol vessel to be built by HJ Heavy Industries will measure 117 meters in length and 15 meters in width, equipped with a high-performance eco-friendly hybrid propulsion system combining a diesel engine and electric motor capable of reaching a top speed of 28 knots (52 km/h). The latest hull design using high-tensile steel will be applied.
Additionally, with a maximum cruising range of 10,000 km, it can operate for 30 days, and its excellent wave resistance and seaworthiness enable it to perform various missions such as search, rescue, and towing even in open ocean areas.
The Coast Guard has been pursuing the acquisition of the latest 3,000-ton eco-friendly large patrol vessels to strengthen wide-area patrol capabilities, aiming to effectively manage the exclusive economic zone by ensuring the safety of fishing vessels, cracking down on illegal foreign fishing vessels, monitoring jurisdictional threats from neighboring countries, and responding swiftly.
Through this order, HJ Heavy Industries once again demonstrated its unrivaled competitiveness in the large patrol vessel sector. The company previously built and delivered five 3,000-ton Pacific-class patrol vessels for the Korea Coast Guard from 2000 to 2008.
Once deployed in national waters, this patrol vessel is expected to play a significant role in safeguarding maritime sovereignty by promptly responding to emergencies such as illegal fishing vessels and territorial sea intrusions.
An HJ Heavy Industries official stated, “We have been entrusted with the important mission of constructing a 3,000-ton large patrol vessel that will be deployed to protect maritime sovereignty and ensure the safety of fishing vessels. Based on over 50 years of experience and capabilities accumulated through building various patrol and rescue ships, we will complete this vessel perfectly.”
HJ Heavy Industries plans to begin the construction process at its Busan Yeongdo shipyard with the goal of building a state-of-the-art patrol vessel with excellent performance and deliver it to the Coast Guard by the end of 2027.
