Ulsan Office of Education Sees Highest Participation of Middle and High School Students in Korean Language Reuse Initiative

1876 Local Middle and High School Students Participate

Significant Increase of 654 Compared to the First Half of the Year

Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Chang-su) recorded the largest participation ever with 1,876 local middle and high school students taking part in the ‘Second Half Year Our Language Rewriting’ event held from the 7th to the 24th of last month.


This number increased by 654 compared to 1,222 participants in the first half of the year.


The students proposed replacing terms such as ‘celebrity’ with ‘popular person’, ‘aggro’ with ‘attention seeking’, ‘marbling’ with ‘meat pattern’, and ‘noe-pisyeol’ (brain official) with ‘unverified opinion’.


After evaluation, Ulsan Office of Education awarded 55 students with top prizes: 10 received the Grand Prize, 15 the Second Prize, and 30 the Third Prize.


The office plans to actively promote the easy and beautiful Korean words directly changed by the students so that students and citizens can use them in daily life.


Since 2021, Ulsan Office of Education has been promoting the ‘Our Language Rewriting’ project to replace foreign and loanwords in everyday life with Korean words, reviving the value of beautiful Korean language.


After 537 students participated in 2021, 958 participated in the first half and 1,359 in the second half of 2022. Last year, 1,319 participated in the first half and 1,585 in the second half.


A representative from the Secondary Education Department said, “We will continue to carry out various student participation activities to help students grow into citizens with a correct sense of identity.”


From 2021 to 2022, Ulsan Office of Education was selected as the best institution in the education office category for two consecutive years in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s excellent case studies of Korean language officers, and was selected as an excellent institution last year.
