Ministry of the Interior and Safety Announces: Resident Population is 15.6 Times Registered Population, Second Highest Nationwide
The resident population of Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province (Governor Seo Tae-won) surpassed 1 million as of the end of June. This marks an increase of more than 300,000 from approximately 695,000 at the end of March, drawing attention as a positive sign for revitalizing the local economy.
According to Gapyeong-gun on the 31st, the resident population is the sum of the registered population (resident registration + foreigners) and the staying population (people who stayed for more than 3 hours at least once a month). It serves as an important indicator to measure the economic and social vitality of population-declining areas.
According to the "2nd Quarter Resident Population Estimation Results for 89 Population-Declining Areas (Cities and Counties)" announced by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Statistics Korea on the 30th, Gapyeong-gun's resident population totaled 1,062,943 as of the end of June. This includes △registered population of 62,393 △staying population of 998,953 △foreigners numbering 1,597.
In particular, Gapyeong-gun's staying population is 15.6 times its registered population, ranking second highest among the 89 population-declining areas nationwide, attracting attention.
The increase in the staying population also plays a crucial role in revitalizing the local economy. Consumption is rising in service sectors such as lodging, dining, and retail, which has a positive ripple effect on the overall regional economy.
Gapyeong-gun analyzes that various festivals held on Jarasum Island have greatly influenced the influx of the resident population. Utilizing Jarasum, a natural ecological tourist site, Gapyeong-gun is continuously striving to attract staying population to the area by hosting distinctive local festivals.
Representative festivals held on Jarasum in the first half of the year include the Global Outdoor Camping Fair, 2024 Camping Cooking Festival, Kovea Camping Festival, and Jarasum Flower Festa.
Governor Seo Tae-won stated, “Surpassing 1 million in Gapyeong-gun’s resident population is a positive signal that breathes new vitality into the local economy, and expectations are high. Moving forward, aiming for sustainable development in harmony with nature, we will continue to prepare various tourism contents to attract staying population and further efforts to revitalize the local economy.”
