Until November 3rd at Sejong Center M Theater
The Sejong Center Seoul Dance Company will perform 'Guk Suho & Kim Jaeduk's Four Seasons' from October 31 to November 3 at the Sejong Center M Theater.
This work, born from the collaboration between traditional Korean dance master Guk Suho and contemporary dancer Kim Jaeduk, interprets the movements of humans and nature through dance using the theme of the seasons. Although Guk Suho and Kim Jaeduk show distinct differences in generation, genre, and choreography style, they complemented each other's creativity through collaboration and jointly planned the entire process including script, direction, and music to complete this work.
Kim Jaeduk was responsible for the choreography of spring and summer, while Guk Suho handled autumn and winter, each expressing their respective seasons. The two choreographers embedded the eternity of time and the meaning of repetitive cycles within the seasonal circulation into the piece. 'Guk Suho & Kim Jaeduk's Four Seasons' focuses on the message that "the time of the four seasons is both nature and the human body," based on the cyclical principles of Eastern philosophy such as "from the intangible to the tangible" and "from yang to yin."
The Four Seasons minimized the use of media devices such as video to concentrate on bodily movement. The minimalist stage mise-en-sc?ne utilized three sides of the stage to maximize the beauty of empty space.
Choreographer Kim Jaeduk also took charge of the music. He gained attention for the music of Seoul Dance Company's 'Ilmu.' In Four Seasons, he presents music that adds Korean melodies by layering live performances of traditional Korean instruments over fast-tempo electronic music.
Ahn Hosang, president of the Sejong Center, said, "This 'Guk Suho & Kim Jaeduk's Four Seasons' is a special stage where tradition and modernity harmonize," adding, "With the participation of the best artists domestically and internationally, it will be a performance that opens a new horizon for Korean dance."
