[US Election 2024]
"Do you like my garbage truck?" Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appeared wearing a fluorescent work vest while riding a 'garbage truck' in the battleground state of Wisconsin on the 30th (local time), just six days before the presidential election. This was a move to rally his supporters by mocking President Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, who had previously been embroiled in controversy for likening Trump supporters to 'garbage.'
According to CNN, Trump, wearing a fluorescent orange vest, sat in the passenger seat of a white truck bearing the Trump campaign slogan and told reporters, "Do you like my garbage truck? This is for (Democratic presidential candidate) Kamala (Vice President Kamala Harris) and Joe Biden." He added, "Joe Biden should be ashamed of what he is doing," and sarcastically said, "And (Harris as well) should be ashamed because she shouldn't leave him alone."
Trump emphasized that his supporters are not garbage, saying, "I could tell you who the real garbage is, but I won't." President Biden had come under fire the previous day for saying, during criticism of a Trump campaign rally in New York where a supporting comedian called the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico a 'garbage island,' "The only garbage I see is his supporters."
Shortly after, President Biden clarified that his remark was aimed at criticizing the comedian who made the supporting speech and did not refer to all Trump supporters. The White House also released Biden's statement that day, emphasizing the phrase was "a supporter’s," not "supporters." Furthermore, Biden sought to clarify that he does not view Trump supporters as garbage. According to the script released by the White House, Biden said, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter's ? his ? his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American."
However, as controversy over Biden likening Trump supporters to garbage continued, it is expected to inevitably affect the final vote in the razor-thin presidential race. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) evaluated, "When Harris gave a spectacular speech at Ellipse Park the day before, Biden hid in the White House and deliberately did not show up. But a week before the election, she trampled on her message of becoming the president for all Americans."
Former President Trump is scheduled to campaign in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that evening. At this event, he is expected to refer to the remarks again and launch an offensive targeting Democratic vice presidential candidate Harris. Brett Favre, the legendary NFL quarterback, will serve as the warm-up speaker at this event. Brown County, where Green Bay is located, is a Republican-friendly area. Except for Barack Obama's first election win in 2008 and Bill Clinton's re-election in 1996, Republican presidential candidates have won in all recent elections.
On the same day, Trump also counterattacked during a campaign event in the battleground state of North Carolina, saying, "Biden finally admitted how he and Kamala think about our supporters." He also claimed that the Washington Post (WP) and Los Angeles (LA) Times, which traditionally support the Democratic Party, announced they would not endorse any candidate in this year's presidential election, indicating "they are saying the Democratic candidate (Harris) is not good."
Meanwhile, Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Nicky Jam withdrew his support for Trump after criticizing the comedian who gave a supporting speech at Trump's New York rally for calling Puerto Rico a "floating garbage island." He said, "Puerto Rico deserves respect," and added, "I am withdrawing my support for Trump and will step back from all political situations."
