On the 30th, Judge Baek Baek-gyu of Civil Division 96 at the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, including victim and bereaved family member A, in a damages claim lawsuit filed against the Republic of Korea. The court ordered the state to pay them 132 million KRW.
Previously, An In-deuk was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court for setting fire to an apartment in Jinju in April 2019 and attacking residents with a weapon as they evacuated, killing five and injuring 17.
Subsequently, four other bereaved families filed a lawsuit against the state in 2021, claiming approximately 540 million KRW, arguing that the police responded negligently, leading to the tragedy. In response, the first-instance court ruled in November last year that the state must pay over 400 million KRW.
