The Korea Environment Institute Publishes Fine Dust Concentration Measured by 'Cheollian' Chollian Satellite 2B

On the 30th, the National Institute of Environmental Research announced that it will provide real-time estimated ground-level fine dust concentrations measured by the 'Chollian Satellite 2B'.

The estimated ground-level fine dust concentration refers to the value obtained by applying artificial intelligence techniques to atmospheric total layer data observed by environmental satellites and then converting it into ground-level concentrations. Since the Environmental Satellite Center released the 'Estimated Ground-level Fine Dust Concentration' in December 2021, it has been improving the results annually through verification.

The estimated fine dust concentration can be viewed by grid on a map. Previously, only the spatial distribution of fine dust could be checked. Now, it is possible to check hourly fine dust concentrations in detailed areas or compare them with air quality model data. Error rate information is also provided to help assess the accuracy of the estimated concentrations when using the data.

Additionally, related functions have been added to easily display, edit, and analyze the numerical data of estimated ground-level fine dust concentrations without separate processing. General users can also utilize the fine dust concentration estimates delivered by the environmental satellite in their preferred way.

Myungsoo Yoo, head of the Climate and Atmospheric Research Division at the National Institute of Environmental Research, stated, “Recently, overseas satellite operating agencies such as NASA have shown increasing interest in South Korea’s geostationary environmental satellites,” adding, “We plan to actively disclose highly useful satellite information, such as numerical data of estimated ground-level fine dust concentrations.”
